Born in Aachen, then west Germany, Garrett is the son of Dove Garrett, a prima ballerina, and Georg Bongartz, a German lawyer. He fell in love with the violin at the early age of four, when his parents bought one for his older brother, Alex. Wanting to imitate his brother, he taught himself how to play the instrument, and when his parents discovered his gift, they made sure that he would receive the best education.
Garrett attended Lübeck Conservatoire at the age of seven, and also worked with Ida Haendel, a Polish violinist to help with his skill. Even at a young age, he was already participating in music festivals with the Festival Kissinger Sommer as his first one at the age of nine. He was also invited to play for the President of Germany, played with Munich Philharmonic Orchestra for India’s 50th Independence, and also with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Later on, he attended the Royal College of Music in London, but only stayed for a year. In 1999, despite being quite a success in his field, he decided to fly to New York and attend the Julliard School to study musicology and composition. While studying there, Garrett also worked as a janitor, bartender and later on a model, to finance his education. He was also able to win the school’s Composition Competition in 2003 with his fugue following the style of Johann Sebastian Bach.
After graduating from Julliard, in 2006 Garrett signed with the record company Decca, and immediately released his first album “Free”, which became a hit with his style of crossover music, bridging the gap between popular and classical music with his works. His first album elevated his career, and tremendously helped his net worth.
In 2008, Garrett’s second album “Encore” did even better than his first, and even earned him an ECHO Classic award. His other albums include “Classic Romance”, and “Rock Symphonies”, which have earned him another two ECHO awards. He also released a live album “David Garrett: Rock Symphonies – Open Air Live”. The success of his albums has made him a world-famous musician, as well as increasing his wealth.
Aside from his music, Garrett also played the lead role in the movie “The Devil’s Violinist” in 2013, in the role of Niccolo Paganini.
Today, Garrett is still active in making music and undertaking tours, with “Explosive” as his most recent album.
In terms of his personal life, Garrett is single. He did recently encounter some issues when he dated porn star Kendall Karson, who accused him of using cocaine, allegedly tried hiring a sexual slave, and supposedly forced her to drink his urine.
